From October 25 to 26, the International Symposium on Geophysical Sciences and Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (CCUS) Technology 2025 was held at Liaoning Petrochemical University. Co-hosted by the university and Liaoning Geophysical Society, the hybrid conference (online + offline) with its main venue at the university gathered over 300 participants, including experts and students from institutions such as University of Alberta (Canada), University of Regina (Canada), Texas A&M University-Commerce (USA), Chinese Geophysical Society, China University of Petroleum (Beijing), Atyrau Oil and Gas University (Kazakhstan), Northeast Petroleum University, and Liaoning Technical University. Zhou Jianxin, Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Geophysical Society, delivered a keynote speech.

Professor Pan Yi, Dean of the School of Petroleum Engineering and Director of the Research Administration Office, opened the conference, advocating breakthroughs in CCUS technologies and basic research. Keynote speakers included Professor Zeng Hongbo (University of Alberta, on molecular interactions for sustainable oil production), Professor Zeng Fanhua (University of Regina, on CO₂ injectivity in geological storage), and Professor Fan Huajun (Texas A&M University-Commerce, on ambient-temperature CO₂ capture). Over 10 scholars, including Professor Song Zhaojie (Liaoning Petrochemical University) and Professor Ainash Shabdirova (Atyrau Oil and Gas University), presented thematic reports. Parallel sessions at three co-organizing universities featured 50+ academic reports by faculty and graduate students on October 26.

The symposium promoted low-carbon development concepts, provided a platform for synergistic low-carbon strategies in oil, gas, and coal industries, and accelerated CCUS technology advancement.
