On November 6, a 7-member delegation from Karaganda State Research University, Kazakhstan, including Prof. Ibrayev Marat (Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry), Prof. Baikenov Murzabek (Department of Chemical Technology and Petrochemistry), and Assoc. Prof. Tusipkhan Almas (Department of Chemical and Petrochemical Engineering), visited our university for a seminar on establishing a Sino-Kazakh Joint Laboratory of International Coal Chemistry.

President Liu Jian, Vice Presidents Cao Jiangtao and Liu Haifeng, along with representatives from the Research Office, Office of International Exchange and Cooperation, and College of Petrochemical Engineering, attended the meeting. Both sides held in-depth discussions on the laboratory’s implementation, research focus, joint talent training, and application for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) platform, reaching consensus to lay a solid foundation for industry-academia-research collaboration in the energy sector between China and Kazakhstan.
During the meeting, President Liu reviewed the long-standing cooperation between the two universities and emphasized coal chemistry as a key intersection of their strengths, urging accelerated and substantive development of the joint laboratory. Vice President Cao highlighted that the cooperation aligns with the BRI, aiming to expand collaboration beyond scientific innovation to educational connectivity. Vice President Liu proposed involving enterprises from both sides to integrate scientific resources with industrial needs and preparing for the application of a BRI National Key Laboratory.
Prof. Baikenov delivered a keynote report on hydrogenation demetallization of heavy components in oil shale and low-temperature tar from Shubarkol-Komir JSC, Kazakhstan, providing insights into research directions. After the seminar, both universities will refine cooperation plans and form a special working group to promote the laboratory’s construction roadmap.
